There are certain video games that are set for release that you can’t help but be excited about. Sometimes, it’s because the video game is from a series that you know is quality. Or it’s from a publisher that has been putting out a lot of great stuff recently. There are also times when you look at a game’s trailers, and you can’t help but go, “Yeah, this will be good!” Monster Hunter Wilds checks all of those boxes, and it’s only a few days away from its release on console and PC. Thankfully, fan hype and hopes will not be dashed in this article because the reviews for the game are exceedingly positive!
Over on Metacritic, all three versions of the game, with the PS5 version taking point, have Monster Hunter Wilds at a whopping 90! That makes it not only a “Must-Play” title on the website but also easily puts it as a “Game of the Year” contender. Sure, we’re still early in 2025, and big titles have yet to roll out, but it’s at the very least “in the discussion.” So, what are people saying about the title?
First and foremost, the game has a BUNCH of perfect scores, including from respected websites like VGC, Siliconera, VG247, and Dualshockers. Every one of them praises Capcom for taking what they had before and “refining it” or “evolving it” to become an even better version of itself. That’s not to say that it’s not “welcoming to new players,” as multiple reviews point out that this could be the “most accessible” entry in the franchise yet. Many even consider it the best in the series by a wide margin.
The open-world element got a bunch of praise, including several reviewers noting the changes to how it looks and reacts to players and how the new weather system adds depth to the various areas you travel to that other games couldn’t.
So, given all of this, what didn’t reviewers like about the game? Well, it’s important to note that some criticisms came in the game’s rather positive reviews. Some cited that while the game was beautiful, it did have some performance issues. Others stated that the story was a bit “sluggish” at times, while others feel the difficulty wasn’t “quite as high” as it could’ve been.
The two “Mixed” reviews on Metacritic added to this, but all they did really was bring the Metacritic score lower than it likely should’ve been. You can try the game for yourself when it arrives on February 28th!
