We have some interesting news about Gears of War: E-Day.

As shared on Twitter by user SASxSH4DOWZ, a LinkedIn profile of a developer at The Coalition claims that they have been working as a senior level designer for Gears of War: E-Day since 2020. Their profile also indicates that they have been working at The Coalition for 13 years. That would have been around the time they were originally acquired by Microsoft. So this person may not be one of the studio’s original employees since the Zipline Games days, but they have been around to see the studio’s history unfold as a Microsoft studio.
Now that we know that People Can Fly is helping develop this title, this little nugget of truth puts everything that’s happened between the two studios in an interesting perspective. The Coalition released Gears 5 in 2019, and its expansion pack Hivebusters the following year. Since then, the studio had been doing support work on Halo Infinite, as well as helping develop the Matrix Awakens Unreal demo.
You would not have blamed fans who were wondering why The Coalition was taking so long to start work on their next Gears of War game. As it turns out, they started work on it without making it public nearly as soon as they released the last one.
People Can Fly, as we know, is in a tricky pickle, as they have one too many of their original projects flop or flounder in development. Their 2021 release Outriders, published by Square Enix, is particularly egregious on this account. As of right now, they presumably still have five projects in the works with multiple publishers. It seemed to be a bad situation for them, and indeed, they had layoffs last year.
But as it turns out, People Can Fly was also working on Gears of War: E-Day this whole time. It’s certainly unfortunate that this fact didn’t seem to save the jobs that the studio had to vacate, but if this game does well, than People Can Fly may get out of that situation where they may be forced to do layoffs again.
SASxSH4DOWZ believes that Gears of War: E-Day is releasing sometime between this year and 2026. They may be basing it all on this LinkedIn profile, but it’s a fairly reasonable conclusion to reach using the context clues. Microsoft just made a big showing of announcing the game in last year’s Xbox Games Showcase, without dropping even a hint about it in the last six years. So, Microsoft wouldn’t make that official announcement until they were sure that the game was 100 % confirmed to release.
Gears of War: E-Day will most definitely be a plum addition to either of Microsoft’s lineup of titles in 2025 or 2026, even after knowing how prodigious both years will be for the company. We’re looking forward to this project which brings us back to Fenix’s and Dom’s early days, and what this prequel tells us about Gears of War’s future.
