The upcoming Worms WMD is set to get a full boxed retail release, developer Team17 has announced.
“After recently celebrating Team17’s 25th anniversary, 2016 marks 21 years for the Worms franchise,” CEO Debbie Bestwick said in a press release. “Besides making lots of us feel old, we listened to our loyal fans to create what we believe is the definitive Worms experience in W.M.D. Fans will now also be able to pick the game up in boxed form from retailers around the globe.”
The game will be distributed by Sold Out. The company’s CEO, Garry Williams, said:
“Sold Out has helped Team17 successfully place multiple versions of Worms onto store shelves, and it’s a pleasure to be taking on similar duties with Worms W.M.D. We think long-term fans of the Worms series will appreciate an engine that maximises the fun of Worms classic physics and gameplay. Team17 has truly captured the essence of fantastic titles like Worms World Party and Worms Armageddon to deliver what will be the best-selling version of the Worms experience to date.”
Worms WMD will feature new vehicles and, for the first time in the series, will allow players to enter buildings, which promises to add “new strategic elements of gameplay to the traditional wormy warfare.”
Vehicles confirmed to be included are tanks and a helicopter, with the game offering an “extensive” single player mode, including training, campaign and challenge modes. As expected, there’s also couch co-op and online offerings, with up to six players controlling eight worms each. That’s up to a whopping 48 worms in any one battle!
Worms WMD will release “later this year” for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
