Killzone 3 Goes Free-To-Play

February 24, 2012 by Mat Growcott

In a very interesting move, Killzone 3’s multiplayer component will be available to all from next week.

In a move that I don't think anybody will have seen coming, Sony have announced that Killzone 3 will be going free-to-play from next week. The entire game will be up for grabs, no limitations will be made on game modes, weapons or maps. The only limitation is that you'll only be able to reach a certain level, after that you'll be expected to pay $14.99 continue gaining experience.

Guerrilla Games, the Netherlands-based developers of the series, says that this is to help keep the game full of players going forward, a move that I wish more developers would consider when sales begin to dwindle. Not every game can be a Call of Duty – each iteration still filled with thousands of players even years after launch – and the sooner developers realize that, the sooner they can begin to profit from other methods of pulling in users.

I'm not sure whether that $14.99 will allow you to get the 10 online trophies that the game has, but expect more details at release next week.
