As part of its 30th Anniversary celebration, Sony has created a dedicated home page focusing on the PlayStation in its various forms. Taking a look at each iteration and what it brought to the table. Sony shared that the PlayStation 2 sold 160 Million units and not 155 Million as was previously thought. This means that the Nintendo Switch would have to sell 14 Million more consoles to have a shot at the title of “Best-selling console of all time”.
As spotted by TheGamer, the PlayStation web page was updated to include information on each console and the platform’s various achievements over the last 30 years. The Switch might be poised to take the title of “Best-selling console of all time” but it may also be just out of reach with the revelation that the PlayStation 2 sold 160 million consoles during its tenure.
The Nintendo Switch has had an incredibly successful run, as handheld gaming seemed to be in its dotage. The Switch completely revitalised the market, despite its modest specifications at launch. As with many of Nintendo’s other home run handhelds. The Switch’s greatest asset has been its library. The Switch is a home to games that just wouldn’t feel right anywhere else and its success has reflected that.
But now sales figures are slowing down and the Switch successor is rumoured to be just around the corner. So for Nintendo to sell another 14 Million consoles has become rather a tall order. That’s not to say it can’t be done. There have been several specials this festive season and there will likely be countless more in the weeks to follow.
We will have to wait and see. Perhaps Nintendo has a final enticing limited edition Switch that it will use to boost sales figures and carry it over the line. In the meantime, the PlayStation 2 will remain the champ.
