We may have the final Switch 2 rumor of 2024 in our hands today.
As shared on the GamingLeaksandRumours subreddit by user Dinosaurin, PH Brazil, AKA Brazilian video game journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe, revealed on livestream that he believes that Nintendo will reveal the Switch 2 this week.
In fact, it could be happening either earlier today or on Tuesday.
Throughout the year, Lippe had been suggesting that Nintendo would reveal the console this year, in contrast to speculation that Nintendo had pegged the reveal for 2025. Notably, he was proven right in claiming that Nintendo had several Directs and presentations that were filled out in August to free up September.
Only, as we all know of course, Nintendo did not go on to use that freed up schedule to announce the Switch in September. We are now looking at October’s final days, which would still fit in with what he had claimed, but barely so.
As to why speculation has grown that Nintendo would not announce the Switch 2 in November or December, there is not evidence to prove it, and no insiders ruling it out per se. This is more a case of fans making reasonable arguments to lead to that conclusion.
And it’s quite simple, really. While there will be a lot of interest in games in the holidays, it’s the peak period for selling games and products that are already out on the market. Nintendo themselves already launched their Halloween season sale, and we know that sale periods are also lined up for video games this coming November, during the Thanksgiving – Black Friday – Cyber Monday period, and of course, the holidays that run across December, including Christmas, Hanukkah, Boxing Day, Rohatsu, etc.
There is an incentive for Nintendo not to announce the Switch 2 in the following two months because they are looking to keep sales momentum for the original Switch going. If they made the announcement just before one of these sale periods, it could harm how many Switch consoles and games they could sell.
All of this may be unconnected to Lippe’s rumor, as he gets his information not from other gamers on online communities like Reddit or Famiboards. We can see that he has his own sources, as he claims to have collected as a journalist in his native Brazil.
It’s plain to see that choosing the date to announce the Switch 2 carries incredibly high stakes for Nintendo, and the industry as a whole. It would really completely make sense if Nintendo really chose to delay the announcement all the way to next year. But now, we only have to wait the days pass and see if the announcement happens.
