This is why PC Ports take so long

February 19, 2012 by Mat Growcott

There has to be a reason why console games take so long to bring to PC, right? Capcom explain…

It's an age old question (at least in gaming terms): why does it take so long to get console games onto the PC? It's almost like they're left as a last thought, and, according to Capcom, that's because that's basically what they are.

"Quite often, PC development starts when the console development finishes or nearly finishes. Unless we start sitting on the console code and not releasing it until the PC development is complete (which we can't do from a business planning perspective), there's going to continue to be some small gaps unfortunately. We try to keep the gap as small as possible and at times, we have been able to make them simultaneous (Dark Void, Bionic Commando, BCR, MotoGP, Dead Rising 2, Dead Rising 2:OTR)."

Of course, this applies specifically to Capcom and Capcom only, but in terms of how it affects the business, I think it makes perfect sense for it to be an industrywide thing. The focus on the more profitable console experience in the first instance, the port to the PC in the second instance. That they're left so late, however, is something of a surprise.
