We all know that, once upon a time, Sega was one of the “big dogs” in the gaming industry. In fact, they were one of the “Big Three” or even “Big Two” during the generations following the Video Game Crash of 1983. They had numerous consoles under its name; they brought forth characters like Sonic The Hedgehog and so on. However, its hardware adventures soon crashed, and that led to it becoming a software developer and publisher solely. For a while, that seemed like a “waste” for them, and they struggled many a year. However, in 2024, they’re pretty much crushing it.
As you can see via the tweet below, Sega has been crushing it with its development and publisher stylings. By the end of the year, they’ll have six titles that seem to be not only great successes but possible Game of the Year contenders! Shall we break them down for you?
We’ll start with the newest title, Metaphor ReFantazio. Admittedly, the game hasn’t come out yet at the time of this writing. However, it’s already getting fantastic buzz. Its review embargo dropped yesterday, and it has a Metacritic score so high that it’s instantly in the GOTY discussions. That brings us to Persona 3 Reload, which was one of the first to release this year. This was another game by Atlus and one that put a true remake spin on the game that saved the company many years ago. People loved the game so much that it broke franchise sales records, and it, too, was considered a lock for certain awards.
Atlus was also responsible for Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, which was a “redo” of sorts to try and stem fan critiques of the original game, and it worked out rather well. Many praised the new story mode and quality-of-life improvements.
Moving to Unicorn Overlord, this was another Vanillaware title that, unsurprisingly, was incredibly deep and fun. It also sold incredibly well on top of being reviewed well. If you haven’t given it a shot yet, you should.
Finally, there’s Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, which kicked off Sega’s big 2024. The spinoff starring Ichiban blew fans and critics away with its incredible amount of gameplay options, on top of a fun story that tied it all together. This is another GOTY contender, and fans are looking forward to the upcoming pirate spinoff.
Oh, we can’t speak to Sonic X Shadow Generations as the title isn’t out yet. However, everything we’ve seen looks positive, and they’re even bringing in Keanu Reeves to voice Shadow The Hedgehog for some special DLC! So, yeah, Sega is crushing it this year.
