It’s fair if you didn’t know Monolith Soft as a developer for quite some time. After all, many of its early titles were more “niche” RPG games or series that you might have only played if you heard of them through word of mouth. However, no matter when you heard about them, they have had a nice impact on the gaming world, and now that they have officially celebrated their 25th anniversary, it’s only quaint that we look back at some of the best things that they have made over that period. If you need a refresher course on some of its titles, the team has you covered.
Specifically, they dropped a special video highlighting the numerous series and titles that have come out through them over the years, from the original Xenogears series all the way up to Xenoblade Chronicles 3. They even put on a special show featuring Noah and Mio playing their flutes while being surrounded by the other main characters from their other games. It’s a beautiful and touching moment that highlights the great games they’ve made:
So, yeah, Monolith Soft has had a great run, and you might recall that earlier in the year, the CEO sent out a message about the impending anniversary and how he felt that the team’s best work was “still to come.” That’s a bold claim, yet it’s one that reflects the drive and expansion that the team has built up over the years. For example, they now have “three development bases,” and they don’t just work on their own games; they help out with others, too. Nintendo has repeatedly called on them for help with developing certain titles, even if it was just to help with Q&A testing.
Either way, gamers are interested in what they have in store next, especially after the team’s run on the Nintendo Switch. It may have started out simple, with the second entry of its now-beloved RPG series, but then they brought the “Definitive Edition” of that series to the Switch to FINALLY give Shulk his due, and it totally worked. Then, by the time they got to Xenoblade Chronicles 3, they had advanced their skills and abilities so much that they made an RPG that was so beautiful, that it didn’t just get nominated for multiple awards; it was nominated for Game of the Year!
With that history already set in stone, you have to wonder what they have planned for Nintendo’s next platform.
