During this week’s State of Play presentation, it was announced that Stellar Blade would be getting Nier Automata DLC sometime in 2024. Fans quickly rejoiced, eager to see Eve in 2B’s outfit and curious about what other new content was on the way. In the meantime, Nier series creator Yoko Taro took to X to explain how the collab came to be, and fans aren’t too surprised.
“We will gladly say yes to anything for money,” the creator said. This isn’t the first time the creator has made such a claim, as in 2022, Taro was asked if he’d be interested in collaborating with other games beyond Final Fantasy XIV and PUBG. “I, Yoko Taro am a slave to capitalism,” he said. “So I will do anything as long as I am paid and will do nothing if there’s no money in it.”
Of course, this may be a slight exaggeration, as Taro previously praised Stellar Blade in a big way, calling it even better than Nier Automata. Unsurprisingly, this level of praise shocked the game’s director Kim Hyung-tae during an April interview.
“The more we talk about it, the more I feel like Stellar Blade can’t compete,” he said. “I consider myself a visualist, not a storyteller. I’ve been creating visuals all my life, so I can’t quite match Yoko Taro when it comes to storytelling. I try to make up for this with gameplay.”
Stellar Blade will also be adding a photo mode later this year, allowing players to pose Eve, change her outfit, and add visual effects to screenshots.
Released for PlayStation 5 on April 26, Stellar Blade sold over 1 million units by June. It’s unclear when the Nier collaboration will be released.
