We have an interesting rumor to follow on yesterday’s news from PlatinumGames.
Yesterday, we reported on PlatinumGames acquiring the trademark for The Wonderful 101 from Nintendo. While it was published yesterday, the trademark was filed as of August 19 of this year.
A Resetera user named DanarchyReigns made a surprising revelation in a thread about this news. They said:
“I guess I could mention this…
You know the top reward for the Kickstarter? It was a tour of PlatinumGames’ office in Japan.
Well, I’m friends with the one guy that bought it, and he had the tour earlier this year. He said Platinum told him they’re working on “two projects”. But nothing specific was told.”
We did our digging and can confirm that PlatinumGames did offer a tour of their Osaka studio as part of The Wonderful 101 Remastered Kickstarter. They made a public post about their plans for the tour in March 2020. Looking around the rest of the Kickstarter updates, it also looks like they gave the tour to backers in April of this year.
So if this rumor is true, that backer was told about PlatinumGames’ two projects being made as recently as last April. It’s possible that there are even more games in the planning and pre-production stages. PlatinumGames would have told their backers about these two games, because they are in the middle of production and expect to be able to release them in the coming years, if not this one.
And this is where we have to end up speculating on the possibilities. While it certainly looks related to The Wonderful 101 news, the trademark changes may not actually mean that PlatinumGames is working on a new game in that franchise.
PlatinumGames has already said before that they want to make a sequel to Astral Chain. Since Bayonetta 3 has seen the biggest success the franchise has ever had, we can also imagine that they have already started working on a Bayonetta 4 or even more spinoff games. It’s easy to imagine them already working on Switch 2 developer kits.
And then there’s the case of Project GG, the last game Kamiya was working on before he quit the company. PlatinumGames said that they decided to change to become a publisher just to be able to release this game. Kamiya has said that PlatinumGames will be in charge of the project from now on, so we have to wait on them to make their announcement.
Of course, PlatinumGames can make completely new properties as well, as their newer creators step up to fill Kamiya’s void. Honestly, we don’t expect PlatinumGames to reveal these games anytime soon, since they would be deep into development to the degree that they did not share more information. But I could be wrong there, if one or both of those games are arriving as launch titles for the Switch 2. So there’s that to think about as well.
