There is plenty of hype built up over the upcoming Dragon Age game. We’ve waited years to see that next release, and in October, we’re going to get the chance to dive into Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Developers at BioWare have been working on this game for a while, and it even had a name change since it was initially unveiled as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Regardless, the game is nearly here, and today, we’re finding out that the developers took inspiration from previous DLC when building up this new installment.
Several publications and content creators are starting to share their preview of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. One of those preview pieces was from Game Developer, who had the chance to speak with the creative director. Jonathan Epler shed a little light behind the scenes at BioWare, where the developers opted to focus on this upcoming RPG.
According to the developer, it was actually DLC that helped give some clear indication as to where the team needed to focus in on. Jonathan Epler spoke about how the base game of Dragon Inquisition was really big. This open-world game was crafted to allow players to experience the space how they desired. However, feedback from this title indicated to the team this game might have just been too big. There were now players losing track of the main story.
It wouldn’t be until the Trespasser DLC that the team dialed it in and offered a more focused storyline for players. Inspiration was even drawn from Mass Effect 3’s Citadel DLC. As a result, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is hopefully a more focused story and dialed-back experience to keep players intrigued from start to finish.
I think a lot of the lessons we learned that helped us with building up The Veilguard was from Inquisition’s Trespasser DLC. The full game is a big, big adventure and a big open world, and we got a lot of feedback about how going open world made the story and narrative feel diluted, and like they didn’t matter as much. Trespasser for us was putting more of a focus on the story, the villain, and building the experience around that tighter and more contained story. BioWare has always been about its cast of characters and its tighter story, and we learned from Trespasser, along with Mass Effect 3’s Citadel DLC, that it was OK to focus things down a little bit from the open world structure and put the story, the side content, characters into a tighter experience. – Jonathan Epler
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if the developers were able to accomplish this goal. As mentioned, fans have been waiting for years for this next installment since the release of Dragon Age: Inquisition back in 2014. So, we imagine expectations are high for this release.
As mentioned, we don’t have to wait too long to see if the game meets your expectations. Dragon Age: The Veilguard will launch on October 31, 2024, and will be available for the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.
