Last week, the PlayStation 5 system received a large update, introducing a new Welcome Hub and personalized 3D audio profiles along with adaptive charging and software performance updates. Unfortunately, while many of these changes are net positives, Final Fantasy XVI players on the console have been having a bad time ever since.
Since the PS5 update went live, FFXIV players have been dealing with crashes and graphical glitches permeating the RPG. Square Enix has acknowledged the problem and is working with Sony to resolve matters as quickly as possible.
“Following the recent release of the PlayStation 5 system update, there have been reports of the game crashing and graphical issues,” the company said on X. “We are currently working with SIE to investigate, and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Please await our further updates.”
Although XVI struck many as a large divergence from typical Final Fantasy games released in the past, Square Enix’s gamble seems to have paid off, as last year’s mainline title managed to bring in tons of new, young fans.
“In recent years, players of the Final Fantasy series have tended to skew towards a higher age range,” XIV DLC director Takeo Kujiraoka said. “However, this time there are survey results showing that more people in their teens and 20s played Final Fantasy XVI. I think this shows that, to a certain extent, we’ve achieved one of our initial goals – to have players of all ages play the latest Final Fantasy game.”
Final Fantasy XVI was released in June 2023 exclusively for the PlayStation 5. It was released for PC on September 17.
