Needless to say, there’s been plenty of discourse about the Minecraft Movie since it first dropped its trailer. The backlash from both movie fans and gaming fans has been loud, and there’s been plenty of “discourse” about “who the movie is for.” However, we’ll put that to the side for a brief moment to talk about another potential controversy that seems to have emerged from the film’s production. YouTube star Valkyrae will be in the film as a special cameo, and she noted in an interview that ComicBook.com documented that her co-worker in Jason Momoa wasn’t the nicest when it came to treating the staff well.
Specifically, she noted:
“I just saw him mistreat some of the crew. And it was pretty disappointing. It was after a very intense scene, and it was a very emotional scene, so maybe he was still in character, I don’t know. But I was just surprised by how he treated some of the crew. He was just really mad at them for not doing something right — it was like setting up the shot and stuff. And he was just angry. Like really mad, and yelling. And so I was like, ‘man this is not a good work environment’. I would not be happy working under these conditions. “
Obviously, we can’t confirm this ourselves, and no one else has come out to speak on this, so it’s possible that it was some kind of a misunderstanding.
No matter what, though, you have to wonder if this is a sign of things to come with the movie as a whole. As we already noted, the Minecraft Movie isn’t “winning people’s hearts” after the trailer debut. From the moment people saw that it was a mix of CGI and live-action, they knew that things would be quite weird and wild indeed, and that sentiment hasn’t improved.
It’s already got numerous dislikes on YouTube, and there’s constant debate online about whether it “matters” how good the film will be, or who goes to see it. The truth of the matter is that both matter, as this has the potential to be a huge flop if things don’t improve. Plus, after a certain other recent video game flop, gamers are fearful that we could be on a “downward slope” of video game adaptations being abused again instead of having quality stuff put out.
Only time will tell for sure, but if more stories like these come out, the movie will be in trouble.
