Atlus has announced that it will hold a Persona 5: The Phantom X announcement event in Japan on September 25. The company also recently opened an official Japanese X account for the title, which is currently only available in Taiwan, Korea, and China. This bodes well for Japanese fans eager to get their hands on the title, though players in the rest of the world are unsure if they will ever get their hands on it.
The PC and mobile spin-off of the massively popular title was released in open beta in select countries earlier this year. A quarterly earnings presentation posted in May revealed that IP owner Sega was pleased with player numbers, claiming that things started “as expected” and that “future expansion in Japan and global is under consideration.”
Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play gacha game developed by the Chinese game company Perfect World Games. It takes place in modern-day tokyo and, like the original, follows a group of characters with the power to wield Personas, including the original Phantom Thieves of Hearts.
Several staff members from Persona 5 were involved in the mobile game’s development, including the series producer Kazuhisa Wada, artist Shigennori Soejima, and vocalist Lyn.
The game will also be shown at Tokyo Game Show 2024 later this month.
Not bringing the game to more overseas markets seems like a strange choice given how popular Persona 5 has continued to be since its initial release in 2017. The game sold over 7.2 million copies by April 2023, making it the best-selling entry in the Megami Tensei franchise and inspiring several spin-offs, including Dancing in Starlight, Persona 5 Strikers, and Persona 5 Tactica.
