Yesterday, we reported on a rumor that Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed to 2026. Today, we have that long awaited follow up.
To recap briefly, GTABase’s Liam shared the rumor he heard that the game was delayed to 2026. He was also hoping to get Bloomberg writer Jason Schreier to chime in, but Jason wasn’t able to respond so quickly.
Jason finally shared what he learned on Twitter:
“The internet (and my DMs) blew up this weekend over a rumor that GTA VI is delayed. Good news is that six Rockstar employees all told me they have not heard of any delay. Bad news: it’s a big, ambitious game and could very well slip! Too much time left to say anything definitive.
I want to be very clear: Six staff told me they weren’t *informed* of a delay. For all I know, Rockstar’s executive team could have decided months ago to delay GTA VI without telling the company. But the lack of internal announcement suggests that the Twitter rumor was nonsense.”
YouTuber LegacyKillaHD and Insider Gaming editor Tom Henderson also chimed in on this publicly on the platform. LegacyKillaHD started things off with this tweet:
“Unless the original source has some high up source at Rockstar, this isn’t really adding up. We’ll see what happens. FWIW I haven’t heard of anything either but most devs are left in the dark with stuff like this.
2026 still is very much on the table, but no indication yet.”
Tom Henderson then replied with this statement:
“I have no idea, but after looking at what went down, it seems pretty straightforward that there isn’t a delay *at the moment*. No one will comment because it can change in a heartbeat, and no one wants an egg on their face and give credit to someone who could have lied, been misled, or passed off an educated guess as a leak, as it could have bigger implications down the road.
*I have no idea*
^ Just need to stress that point because people are already running with stuff I haven’t said.”
We can understand that people are getting emotionally invested with this issue, so we will sum it up once again just to make sure no one we quoted above is misinterpreted. Schreier, Henderson, and LegacyKillaHD were all told there is no new delay right now for Grand Theft Auto 6.
However, they are also making it clear that they can’t assure fans that Grand Theft Auto 6 will definitely not be delayed anymore. They are being careful in explaining this in case Rockstar does delay the game. For all we know, Rockstar management may have already decided on that delay, but that information was not relayed down to the employees.
While we know why fans are eager to debunk and to get clear answers on this issue, the truth is even all of this are only tentative claims on an ongoing situation. For what it’s worth, it looks like Liam did get bad information, and he’s publicly expressed his regret for that.
Finally, we want to emphasize once again, that no one involved in this story should be attacked or harassed for making a claim about the game that is disagreeable. As best as we can tell, everyone is on the up and up, and getting bad information does not indicate malicious intent.
