Destiny 2 to Adopt New Release Model Going Forward

September 9, 2024 by Carley Garcia

That’s one way to celebrate the franchise’s 10th anniversary.

To coincide with the franchise’s 10th anniversary, Bungie has announced that Destiny 2 will adopt an entirely new release model going forward. As detailed in a new blog post, the developer will now aim to release two medium-sized expansions and four major free content updates each year, rather than one large annual expansion.

A new roadmap for Destiny 2 shows that players can expect major updates in Summer 2025, Fall 2025, Winter 2025, and Spring 2026.

“We believe it’s time for Destiny to change and evolve, and that our community wants this game to grow and innovate too. And to do that, we need to start breaking some of the molds,” said Game Director Tyson Green.

“We are excited to try new things that challenge your idea of what a Destiny experience can be. We are actively prototyping non-linear campaigns, exploration experiences similar to the Dreaming City or Metroidvanias, and even more unusual formats like roguelikes or survival shooters. Each expansion will present a new opportunity to try something different.”

The new model will begin in Summer 2025 with the release of Codename Apollo, which is said to be a “nonlinear character-driven adventure.”

“Previously, in stories like The Final Shape, you experienced the story as A to B to C to D in a nice straight line. In Codename: Apollo, our story takes place over dozens of threads you’ll explore and discover,” explains Narrative Director Alison Lührs.

“So, when you land on our brand new location, the story starts at A, and then you can choose if you want to explore C first, or try and get into B, or maybe investigate D.”

Bungie is also working to modernize the game’s activity UI and will rework activity rewards in the near future.

Destiny 2 was released as a pay-to-play game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in 2017. The game became free-to-play in 2019 and released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2020.
