When it comes right down to it, Fallout New Vegas might be the best entry in the entire post-apocalyptic RPG franchise. Yes, we’re including the original titles, the Bethesda titles, and everything in between. The game was made after Bethesda made its stunning revival of the franchise, and then Obsidian Entertainment was brought in to make an expansion, which turned into an entirely new entry focused on the city of New Vegas. The way that Obsidian went into the game’s universe and crafted something both familiar and special resonated with many fans. Since then, they’ve wanted a true sequel or at least another entry in the saga from the developer’s unique perspective.
Enter Josh Sawyer, who worked on the game as one of the project leads. In fact, he had multiple roles in making the title, and he was asked in a Q&A that you can watch below about coming back to the series, and he had an interesting reply:
“Sure. With any project I think it has to do with, ‘What are we doing, what are the boundaries that we’re working within, what am I allowed to do and not allowed to do?’ I think that with any IP, especially one I’ve worked with before, the question is, what do I want to do this time that I wasn’t able to do last time? And if those constraints are just really constraining then it’s not very appealing, because who wants to work on something where the one thing they want to explore is not possible to explore?”
That might seem odd to “request,” but not everyone looks at RPGs, or games in general, in the same way. For Sawyer, it’s clear he wants to make something special with each thing that he does. Meanwhile, Bethesda has been known to make big steps forward with their games and then stick in that “specific zone” for a long time until they know they need to take that big step forward again. A certain spacefaring title fits that mold, wouldn’t you say?
Fallout New Vegas stood out in gamers’ minds because it took what Bethesda did and expanded upon it greatly. They added special characters that gamers dug and added even more stories and choices to the mix. The game was so impactful that even the live-action series is going to head to New Vegas!
As to whether Obsidian will ever grace the Wasteland again, that’s up to them and Bethesda.
