Nintendo Has Started A Legal Battle To Sue Pirates

July 2, 2024 by Dennis Patrick

A subreddit moderator is among the targeted individuals.

There is no shortage of piracy in the video game industry. No matter what console and platform you look at, pirates will attempt to figure out a way to break through security measures. For some, it’s all about opening up a console platform to make it more accessible to new features. However, others break through the security measures for more nefarious reasons. Today, we’re finding out that Nintendo has set its targets on two individuals dealing with Switch piracy.

Thanks to a report from TorrentFreak, we’re finding out about a new legal battle that Nintendo has entered. As mentioned, two individuals have been targeted. Those two are reportedly Modded Hardware and subreddit moderator of r/SwitchPirates on Reddit and Archbox.

Regarding Modden Hardware, the legal pursuit essentially paints this individual as having sold various modded consoles and devices. It’s also noted that the user operated a shop advertising these mods and provided pirated copies of Nintendo Switch games. What is surprising is that according to TorrentFreak, Nintendo, and Modded Hardware spoke with the promise of ceasing operations. Seemingly, there wasn’t more to the deal than just ending operations.

Unfortunately, Nintendo has had enough after months of waiting for the shop to close down. It’s reported that Modded Hardware was hopeful to find a buyer for their shop, but with business not ceasing and the shop still open, Nintendo has begun the next steps to sue this individual. With that said, Modded Hardware is not alone.

There is also a moderator for r/SwitchPirates on Reddit named Archbox, who has been targeted. According to the report, this individual bragged about being a pirate and offered services similar to Modded Hardware. Both have landed in legal trouble with Nintendo, and we’ll have to wait and see what comes of this court battle or if it becomes settled out of court.

This legal battle might be a reminder from Nintendo of what could happen, especially since they have a brand new console coming out. We already know the next console is in the works, and even Nintendo’s president provided a statement about battling scalpers for when it launches.
