It seems that we have a 2K Games title to look forward to in the near future.
Redditor Turbostrider27 has shared a new rumor on Reddit, in response to Geoff Keighley’s video setting expectations for this year’s Summer Games Fest, which is of course coming later this week.
Here’s what Turbostrider27 said:
“Yes. 2k has a big announcement there. Speculation is either Mafia 4 (or new Mafia game) OR a new Borderlands game.
Not Bioshock due to its troubled development.”
So that’s an interesting rumor to consider. We don’t know if Turbostrider27 talked to someone else in regards to speculation, but they may have their own reasons to name these potential titles.
For those who may not remember, 2K Games’ UK division officially announced that the company was making a new Bioshock title in 2019. 2K also revealed they established an entirely new studio, named Cloud Chamber, to work on this project.
2K has stayed mum on this project for all these years, but it should be hitting the five year anniversary of its announcement soon. That would be sufficient time to finish making a AAA game nowadays, so whatever is going on in this project must be serious.
It does seem more likely that a new Borderlands could get announced. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the game would be releasing soon. But since 2K recently acquired the studio Gearbox, they may want to affirm that the investment was expected to pay off immediately.
Mafia would be quite a surprise if it turned out that was the upcoming game. The latest game in that franchise, Mafia III, goes back all the way to 2016. It’s not that that would be impossible, but we wouldn’t know what would push 2K to reexamine the franchise with a new game.
There have been rumors that 2K could be releasing an association football game. We recently reported that 2K was rumored to have gotten the FIFA video game license, but another more casual sports game could also be coming, with Lego license.
So there’s several games that could be potential announcements for this year, but we won’t really know what the studio has planned next until we see the actual announcement. Of course, Grand Theft Auto remains the domain of Rockstar Games, who stands as related, but completely separate, to 2K Games. Take-Two Interactive, their common parent company, certainly has more than enough franchises and studios under them to keep them viable in between Rockstar releases.
