Rumor: We’ll Finally Learn What Concord Is In Two Weeks

May 23, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

I don’t think it’s just a grape.

There’s now reason to believe that Sony is finally ready to show Concord to us.

As reported by Insider Gaming, billbil-kun has written about a Concord reveal coming in the next 15 days. That runs from today to June 7, and that last possible date comes two days earlier than this year’s Summer Games Fest and Xbox Games Showcase.

billbil-kun also says that Sony will show gameplay, as well as the game’s characters, with game assets already uploaded ‘somewhere.’ This could just be the promotional materials, or the pics and clips that they would put on the PlayStation Blog. Or, billbil-kun could be implying that Sony will be launching the game shortly after this official reveal.

However, billbil-kun said nothing about a possible PlayStation Showcase happening this month, where Sony could show Concord. That’s been a rumor going on for a while now, as it’s believed that Sony is finally ready to reveal some of the live service games that they have been producing behind the scenes for years now.

You know about as much as the rest of us about Concord, but if this game is getting announced and even released, it does come at an interesting time for Sony and the industry. We have also been reporting on Valve releasing another potential live service game themselves, a hero shooter / MOBA hybrid called Deadlock.

Among Sony’s other competitors, the closest Nintendo has to a live service game might be Splatoon, though they haven’t really committed to a content schedule to keep each incarnation supported for years with new seasons. Microsoft also has upcoming live service games, such as the similarly mysterious Contraband. But of course, they already have a host of live service games already out and making money as well.

But all of these companies with live service games on the way or active now have to worry about the emerging trends in the genre as a whole. Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League may be the most visible incarnation of this, but many other live service games are seeing their player numbers drop, and also just flat out flop.

Games that already saw the player numbers drop include massive early 2024 hits Helldivers 2 and Palworld (not live service but indicative of the same trend), but they’re the lucky ones. The Finals, Skull and Bones, and Payday 3 have dropped off in player numbers too quickly, in comparison to when they released and how much money they made.

The prevailing theory is that most of gamers’ attention is stuck on games that were already established a few years ago, such as Minecraft and Fortnite. However, there are games like Sea of Thieves, that proved that they can buck this trend.

Whether Concord is good enough to avoid this fate, and prove to be a success for PlayStation, we may find out as soon as its reveal.
