Mass Effect 3 Trailer Breakdown: “Adrenaline-Pumping Gameplay”

February 9, 2012 by Josh Harmon

BioWare has unleashed a new batch of trailers for Mass Effect 3. We’re breaking them all down to see what we can discover.

BioWare has released a new batch of Mass Effect 3 trailers, and we're breaking them down one at a time, hoping to glean every last bit of information we can about the game before its release next month.

This trailer definitely features the least new info of the three, since it's all about atmosphere and fancy-looking action, but there's definitely evidence of some of some new gameplay additions in Mass Effect 3.

At around the 14 second mark, we see Commander Shepard firing at out of the some sort of low-flying drop ship. That sort of experience is brand new to the franchise, which traditionally just drops you off on the planet's surface for a mission and picks you up via cutscene at the end. By the looks of things, Mass Effect 3's gameplay will have a much more cinematic bend, with these kind of big setpiece-driven combat scenarios varying the pace.

A few seconds later, Shepard fires at a Brute with some kind of mounted machine gun. That's another first for the series, which has never had controllable turrets (unless you count the Mako, but we'd all like to forget that thing existed).

19 seconds in, we see Shepard dash towards an enemy, then blow his head off with a blast from a shotgun. Mass Effect 3's is shaping up to be much gorier than the first two games.

Immediately following, the Commander chucks a few grenades, which are back in after their omission from Mass Effect 2.

Finally, we see the last new addition on display, a dodge-roll maneuver that Shepard can use to dive into cover and evade slow-moving projectiles.

Mass Effect 3 certainly expands on the more action-oriented angle of the second game, which should make the experience stand out among other popular third-person shooters. With BioWare promising to expand the RPG elements back to depth found in the first game, Mass Effect 3 should definitely provide something for everyone when it launches early next month on the PS3, 360, and PC.
