CCP's upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive MMOFPS Dust 514 will offer support for keyboard and mouse, the EVE Online developer has announced.
The news was first reported by fansite DUST 514 Base, then confirmed by a developer on Twitter.
The decision may well have interesting results, as the keyboard and mouse setup is widely regarded by the gaming community to offer quicker reaction time and precision than a standard gamepad. By allowing direct competion between both control schemes, CCP could theoretically create an unlevel playing field, where anyone who takes the time to hook up a keyboard and mouse will have a leg up on those using the system's intended controller. I can't imagine that will make the community too happy in the long run.
Still, it's quite clear why they opted for this approach. Above all else, Dust 514 is an effort to expand the universe of their PC MMO EVE Online, and that community will be more inclined to make the leap if they can do so with a comfortable control scheme.
We'll find out exactly how the gamble pays off when Dust 514 launches this summer.
