Team Ninja Reveals Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition

February 7, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

This is clearly the version to get moving forward.

Team Ninja has revealed Wo Long Fallen Dynasty: Complete Edition.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty was originally released on March 3, 2023 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows via Steam. The game was a critical and commercial success for Team Ninja, with reviewers noting how the studio had refined the maso-core gameplay systems they first developed in the Nioh games.

As it turns out, this Team Ninja title was itself connected to their publisher Tecmo Koei’s long history with Chinese historical settings for their games. Before their merger, Koei in particular had been known for their Romance of the Three Kingdoms video game franchise, which they brought to various computers and game consoles since the 1980s.

These games were turn-based tactical role-playing simulation grand strategy wargames, quite an ambitious genre to bring to Japan and the greater Asian video game market, but Koei had quite the hook. The games were based both on the Luo Guanzhong novel, as well as the Records of the Three Kingdoms.

These aren’t just historical novels to Chinese speaking audiences, but beloved parts of their popular culture, deep in their history. To the West, this could be compared to the enduring popularity of Sherlock Holmes or Peter Pan, having inspired numerous adaptations through the years, and also inspiring the creation of other characters.

Wo Long Fallen Dynasty is a spinoff of sorts to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. It features many of the most famous and popular characters from that story, including general Cao Cao, the Oath Brothers, Lu Bu, and Kongming. The story itself takes some liberties with the novel, but is generally set in years prior to the start of the book itself.

While it may have seemed strange to a Western audience that a Japanese studio like Team Ninja was interested in making a game set in China, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms makes it easier to understand. The novel is well loved in Japan and Korea as well as China, in the same way Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes crossed borders over to America.

As you can imagine from the name of this special edition, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty: Complete Edition has all the DLCs Team Ninja has published through the months. But it also includes all the collaboration content that has come with it too, including Nioh 2, Lies of P, and Naraka Bladepoint. Obviously this is now the version of the game to get.
