Ubisoft has announced that they are well aware of the character bug in The Division on the Xbox One that has caused many characters to go missing once players installed the Incursion update. The bug deleted the characters of many high level characters, prompting a massive outcry from players who invested hundreds of hours into the game. Needless to say, it’s a big problem.
The studio has looked into the cause of the problem, and explained it in-depth:
“The issue was caused by a malfunctioning server that couldn’t synchronize character data correctly and corrupted them instead,” the developer wrote. “The game client was unable to read this corrupted data, and simply assumed that the character didn’t exist. Once this has been identified, we were able to restore the server to its normal functions, thus ensuring that the issue will no longer occur for other players.”
Ubisoft wants affected players to know that their characters have not been erased and that they will be restored in an update that will be released very soon. The Division will be taken offline for them to implement the fix and players will be alerted to when that happens.
Unfortunately, the studio says that some progress may be lost as a result of the bug.
“Please note however that in order to make your character available, we will need to restore the latest uncorrupted save of your entire account, which happened during the server maintenance of April 12,” Ubisoft said. “In other words, your character will be back just as you left it on April 12 at 9am CEST | 3am EDT | 12am PDT. You will lose any progress made on this character or any other one from the same account between April 12 and the next maintenance. This only applies to players who have been affected by the missing character issue.”
It’s better than nothing.
The game’s latest update added Incursions to the mix, the game’s variation of raid-style gameplay previously seen in Destiny and MMORPGs.
