The games found in the collection include Metal Gear for MSX2, Metal Gear for NES, Snake’s Revenge for NES, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake for MSX2, Metal Gear Solid for PlayStation, including the VR Missions, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, both for Playstation 2.
One strange quirk about Metal Gear’s chronology is that it had skipped over the 4th generation, or 16-bit generation of consoles entirely. Kojima found himself working in a variety of different games at the time, namely, the graphic adventure games Snatcher and Policenauts. He also found himself working on the Beatmania (rhythm arcade game) and Tokimeki Memorial (dating game) series in between Metal Gear.
So it wasn’t like Kojima only ever made Metal Gear or video games about war. Of course, even if he is to be credited as the auteur in charge of production, many of the staffers at Konami were also very responsible for the Metal Gear franchise as well. Some of those people went on to stay at Konami, and perhaps are in charge of this anthology now, while some are also known to have moved with Kojima into his own studio.
It had been long feared that the Metal Gear franchise would be left buried after Kojima’s acrimonious split with Konami. Aside from the about face of the bosses at Konami, we do know that many of Konami’s staffers, who were there to make and publish these games themselves, were looking for the opportunity to bring the classic games back.
And so we can look forward to even more rereleases of Konami’s Metal Gear library. It would be interesting to see if we could get oddities like Metal Gear Ghost Babel and the Metal Gear Acid games in the future (definite shoe ins to release on the Switch or Switch 2). Here and now, however, we can enjoy once again the first two generations of Metal Gear games, available to a new audience, and available on any platform of your choice.
To mark the occasion, Konami also created a launch trailer for this release. You can watch the launch trailer below.
