Given the growth that the video game adaptation subgenre has seen since 2019, studios of all sizes are taking more chances on making something special based on hit video games. That includes Amazon, who is using its Amazon Prime Video service to bring people a Fallout TV Series. Typically, this would fill fans with dread, as large-scale video game adaptations have done poorly in the past. However, with the budget that the show seems to have, things might just be good. Further fueling this hope is a leaked teaser that dropped today on the internet, and it shows many things fans will want to see.
For example, several characters wear power suits, a big item in the main franchise. We also see the Vault Dwellers preparing to enter the Wasteland for the first time. We also see a Ghoul who looks awfully familiar to certain characters from past games. Just as important, we see the explosions of nuclear devices both in the distance and up close. After all, war never changes.
While the teaser doesn’t give fans everything they want, it does indicate that the scale and scope of the Fallout TV Series will be massive, just like the games themselves. The reason that’s important is that the series is known for its sprawling narrative and making the world feel alive even though it’s post-apocalyptic. It would’ve been easy for them to simply focus on one Vault Dweller coming to the Wasteland and trying to save one town they stumble into, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here.
We know that iconic groups like the Brotherhood of Steel will be in the series, and Amazon will undoubtedly want numerous Wasteland monsters to appear, too, to up the danger levels.
The bad news is that despite all the leaks and teasers, it’s unclear when the series will arrive. The current strikes going on with the writers’ and actors guilds are likely affecting the release date. The show is finished filming by all accounts, but the actors can’t talk about the project or promote it meaningfully because of the strikes. That is causing a serious ripple effect across Hollywood and causing delays left and right. Based on where things stand now, the series will likely debut in 2024 after things cool down.
So until then, we’ll simply have to wait for Bethesda or Amazon to drop more information on the show.
