UPDATE
Are you excited about what the “Invasion” mode will bring to the game? How much do you think you’ll play it? Let us know below!
ORIGINAL STORY
Mortal Kombat 1 continues to impress fans with its detailed character trailers and fun twists on the lore via the new world/timeline in which the title is set. Yesterday, they dropped a trailer focused on Outworld, where they revealed Sindel, General Shao Khan, and the reborn Raiden. But that wasn’t the only thing they talked about during Gamescom. They offered a hands-on session with several people, including those at the PlayStation Blog. One of those members wrote a post detailing the main campaign and the new mode being added called “Invasion.” The mode will play like nothing you’ve done in the franchise before.
The mode plays like a board game. According to the previewer, you get to select a party and move them around the map while taking on scores of enemies. As you do, you’ll be able to level up your character, equip them with various items, and give them more challenges as time goes on.
If you’re looking for a more substantial reason to play “Invasion,” there are plenty. By diving into this mode, you’ll get the in-game currency, literally called “Kurrency,” and unlock things such as concept art.
The key thing to note about this mode is its ever-changing state. The name isn’t just a fancy title. It’s a reflection of how things will evolve after the game launches. In the “story” of the mode, various Kombatants from other realms and timelines will come to take over or cause havoc. It’ll be your job to put them back where they came from and stop the invasion from succeeding. The mode will constantly update to provide new threats and opportunities to try new things.
Plus, there are mini-games within the mode that call back to past parts of the franchise. That includes the beloved “Test Your Might” mini-game.
The previewer also discussed the other elements of the game, such as how the campaign is a “cinematic experience” unlike anything we’ve seen in the franchise before. They cited numerous twists and turns thanks to Fire God Liu Kang rewriting everything, and they, among others, were told that Mortal Kombat 1 might have the craziest ending in series history. Given all the combustible elements already in the narrative, it’s hard to predict what it might be, especially since we still have three characters yet to be revealed.
Regardless, the game seems like a true love letter to all the games that came before while crafting something fresh and new. We’ll see how well it does when it drops on September 19th.
