Gamescom has already dropped all manner of trailers and reveals on gamers, and it’s hard to keep up with all that’s going down. However, if you’ve been looking for fighting game news, we have you covered. At the show, Harada himself appeared to unveil details about a new mode and drop a new trailer as well. In that trailer, we got the confirmed release date for Tekken 8. The game will arrive on January 26th, 2024. So while we have a bit longer to wait, you can take heart in knowing that the new year will start with a bang.
As for what the new mode is, it’s called “Arcade Quest.” Apparently, you’ll be able to go through a new story mode featuring the roster’s characters and get to show them off in new ways. That includes dressing them up differently and having fun interactions with them. The mode also indicates that it’s where online players will get to mingle and do various battles.
That includes setting up tournaments for you to play in and potentially having 1-v-1 matches with any available players you find.
If any of this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve recently had something like this drop with Street Fighter 6 via their character creator mode. To be clear, Tekken 8 is likely less packed than that, but the vibe is very similar.
Harada stated that gamers will have fun diving into this new mode and that there will be some “AI learning” going on to make each battle tougher than the last. So it appears the title will make you work for every victory.
The new trailer also highlighted that there will be 32 characters in the main roster, with every confirmed character being shown off. There’s still potential for DLC characters, but we’re unlikely to hear about that until the game’s release next January.
The real question is where things go in the storyline. The trailer indicated that a “new saga begins,” but we also know the game will continue telling the tale of Jin Kazama versus Kazuya Mishima. The father and son war has been going on for multiple titles, and the last entry hit a peak in that tale when Kazuya fought and killed his father, Heihachi.
We know at least one twist will be present at Jin’s mother, Jun Kazama, has somehow returned after decades of absences. So it’ll be interesting to see how she fits into everything.
