Sega Reportedly Bringing Back Two Big IPs

July 24, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Sega is looking back at its earlier releases.

Sega has been around for ages, and back in the day, they were even a powerhouse name to deal with for console gaming. But that ended with the Sega Dreamcast, and since then, they’ve just stuck with software. With its line of video game IPs rather extensive, it seems that the company is considering a revival of its past iconic franchises. If one report is to be believed, there are talks going on right now to bring back two video game classics into the marketplace.

Now this is all just a rumor, right now, as we don’t have anything official to report on. However, thanks to a report on Tech4Gamers, we learned that industry insider Shpeshal Nick was featured on The XboxEra Podcast. During the conversation, the industry insider claimed that Sega was considering a few franchises to bring back into the limelight. There was plenty of talk online regarding Sega’s Sonic franchise with remakes, but according to Nick, it seems that Sega is interested in Altered Beast and Gunstar Heroes as well.

Both franchises are classics, and you likely have at least heard of them if you haven’t already played those games. With Altered Beast, the game was released in 1988 and acted as a beat ’em up title. Players would go through an Ancient Greece setting as they battled the ruler of the underworld, Neff. Throughout the levels, players would gain power-ups that turned our protagonist hero into different hybrid animals like a wolf, bear, and tiger. Meanwhile, a bit later on, Sega published Gunstar Heroes in 1993. This is a run-and-gun experience with players battling off an evil empire to obtain special gems. Throughout the game, players would be able to obtain power-ups that changed their weapons. These power-ups could even be stacked to give you different reactions to your weapon’s firepower.

We’re not sure what Sega might have planned for these two franchises. It could be a complete remake or a new installment that keeps the overall same design that these retro games are known for. Regardless, we’ll have to wait for Sega to make an official announcement regarding these two franchises. But if these two IPs do have a new future ahead of them, it will be interesting to see if Sega opts to go back into their catalog and see what other games could see a new release.
