Bungie Drops Destiny Subreddit Due To Harassment

July 18, 2023 by Dennis Patrick

Don’t expect community managers to respond.

Reddit has been dubbed the front page of the internet. We’ve seen some changes to the platform recently that were not well received by the community of viewers. Mainly, the Reddit team had made it to where third-party apps would no longer be accessible to Reddit’s API. Regardless, that hasn’t stopped fans from still using the main official Reddit website and application to connect and share content. Today, it looks like those on the Destiny subreddit will find Bungie will no longer respond to player feedback. This change has nothing to do with the recent Reddit API changes. Instead, a few individuals have proven to be problematic for community managers.

Various subreddits have been great to provide feedback and connect with fans of various video games. So it’s no surprise that developers make use of these subreddits by reaching out and replying to players directly on the various posts. Bungie did that on the Destiny subreddit, but now they have explained why we’ve been seeing fewer responses online. This comes after a post was made calling out Bungie for their community managers not doing their jobs. Fans were growing frustrated that we were not seeing Bungie accounts reaching out and providing aid or responses to player feedback posts. That’s when one comment was made to explain the reason we’re not seeing them featured on the subreddit as much as before.

Appreciate the feedback.

Unfortunately, devs who aren’t even CMs are still being harassed just because they work at Bungie, so using the CM account on Reddit will put a bigger target on all of the CM’s backs.

I completely understand the want to go back to how we used to respond all the time here, but that time has passed. Until everyone can feel safe again, I wouldn’t expect to see many responses from us here for the foreseeable future.

However, just because we aren’t responding often doesn’t mean we aren’t still looking at feedback. As a legend once said, “we’re listening,” and while we can’t always act on the feedback, we do share it with stakeholders every single week. So please, keep it coming.

You may find us responding more on our own Help forums, so please report any issues to us there.

Bungie – Reddit

Overall, it has to do with accounts being harassed and targeted by individuals. As a result, it was deemed no longer safe for their staff. There was even a big lawsuit recently against one of these harassers. With individuals actively seeking these community managers out, the Bungie team has opted to refrain from posting going forward, and it’s uncertain if that will ever change. Meanwhile, they will continue to monitor the subreddit for feedback and continue to make changes when needed. But for more direct responses from the team at Bungie, you’re best bet right now is going through their official Help forums. Meanwhile, in other Destiny-related news, the Bungie team confirmed that their upcoming Marathon title would not replace Destiny 2.
