Netflix CEO Reed Hastings confirmed that the company no longer has any plans to rent video games by mail.
The news came during a conference call with investors yesterday, as reported by Reuters. After reporting stronger fourth quarter financials than many expected, Hastings revealed that the company no longer intends to compete with GameFly, and will focus instead on streaming 3D content.
In September of last year, the company announced that they would be spinning off the business into two separate entities. Netflix would now focus solely on streaming content, while a new brand, Qwikster, would handle DVD-by-mail rentals and also spearhead the company's first push into gaming.
Following three weeks of public outcry and flagellation by the tech media, Netflix abandoned the split, leaving the future of the planned game rentals up in the air. At the last investor conference call in October, Hastings said the company was itself undecided, adding that "the decision will have little financial impact either way."
