id Software and Bethesda have teamed up with Joe Kosinski, the director of Oblivion and Tron: Legacy, to produce a live action trailer for their upcoming first-person shooter and reboot of the granddaddy of all FPS games, DOOM.
According to the description of the video, the trailer evokes the three pillars of DOOM’s gameplay: relentless combat, terrifying demons, and bad ass guns. I’m inclined to agree.
The trailer combines some realistic looking CGI demons with live-action footage of the DOOM Marine running around in his power armor, blasting the hordes of hell to kingdom come. He goes up against a menagerie of hellish minions before facing off against what looks like a Cyberdaemon. It ends there, but the journey’s going to begin for anyone who pre-ordered the game ahead of its release when the online multiplayer beta goes live this weekend.
The game is currently under development at id Software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and invented multiplayer Deathmatch. Yesterday, the developers held a “Day of Doom” tournament that showcased DOOM in all its multiplayer glory. Details about Doom’s six multiplayer modes were originally revealed in February before Bethesda and developer id Software provided additional details earlier this month. Nine maps will feature in the game: Infernal, Chasm, Disposal, Helix, Perdition, Sacrilegious, Heatwave, and Beneath. Information about the maps and what to expect from each can be found here.
Watch the trailer above. It really captures the spirit of the FPS. It reminds me why I love video games.
DOOM is rated M for Mature by the ESRB and will launch worldwide on May 13, 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
