During Summer Game Fest, we were treated to a few new video game announcements and a slew of updates to already revealed video game projects. But one of the games that might have surprised fans was a brand new Sonic title. Rather than bring out another 3D open-world experience, much like their previous Sonic Frontiers, our favorite blue hedgehog returned to a 2D side-scrolling experience. Sonic Superstars might have caught fans by surprise, but it’s likely a welcomed one, and today we’re finding out another tidbit of information.
Sonic Superstars fans are finding out today that this game will only feature local cooperative multiplayer. This news comes from the official Sonic Superstars website highlighting more game information. One of the graphics to highlight the game was about multiplayer, as we know that up to four players can go through this game. Additionally, it looks like this would offer a drop-in and drop-out experience. But some players might be disappointed by the fact that we’ll be limited to strictly local co-op. So you’ll have to be together on the same console in order to enjoy this game’s multiplayer component.
More Friends, More Fun: For the first time ever in a Sonic game, play through the entire campaign with up to 3 other players with drop-in and drop-out 4-Player Local Co-op.

Within the game narrative, Sonic and his friends are trying to stop Dr. Eggman, Fang, along with a new mysterious adversary that’s trying to convert the Northstar Island’s giant critters into Badniks. As a result, you’ll be barreling through the different environments in hopes of gathering all the Chaos Emeralds along with battling against the enemies in hopes of keeping the islands peaceful.
As mentioned, there is the ability to play with up to four players. As a result, players can pick to play as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose. Each will have unique abilities to help navigate the Northstar Islands and fight against Dr. Eggman and his allies. Currently, Sonic Superstars is set to launch into the marketplace sometime in the Fall of this year.
But when the game does release, we’ll know that it will be available for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms. If you missed out on the game’s initial announcement, you can check out the game trailer in the video we have embedded above.
