Hideo Kojima Helped Make Documentary About Himself

June 8, 2023 by Todd Black

A man who has connected worlds.

When you talk about people who have been in the video game space for a long time, you will inevitably hear about their journey from where they started to where they are now. After all, what’s a journey without struggle, sacrifice, inspiration, and everything in between? Sometimes, these developers start in one place and then end up in a place completely different. For the legendary Hideo Kojima, he is a man who helmed one of the greatest and most successful gaming franchises in history via Metal Gear Solid at Konami, then was basically tossed aside. That left many wondering what he would do next and whether he could recover.

As we know, he went on to make the company Kojima Productions, where he risked everything to make games that he had full control over and could match the vision that he had in his mind, like with Death Stranding. But how was he able to pull off such a drastic switch? Well, we’re going to find out in a documentary that is being released later this month about him.

On June 17th, “Hideo Kojima: Connecting Worlds” will chronicle how Kojima went from Konami to trying to make his own company and not simply “make games,” but make the visions from his mind. Within the documentary, you’ll hear form Kojima himself on his process, his life, and what led him to do certain things. You’ll also hear from others who will offer their own insight on the risks that Kojima took by doing these things and whether they were logical to try in the first place.

It may seem odd for someone like Kojima to help make a documentary about himself, but given all that he went through post-Konami, and the “new world” that he suddenly found himself in after being in one spot for years, it makes sense that he wants to share his journey.

Perhaps he wants to use this documentary to help inspire others to strike out on their own and make their own creative visions. We could always use some creative minds to make unique video games for various systems.

The documentary doesn’t mean Kojima isn’t hard at work on other things. He’s been working on a sequel to his first independent title and has other projects in the works. The man is very busy, and that’s what he likes to be. As he says in the trailer, “I’m a daydreamer,” and he wants to keep making his daydreams come true.
