EA DICE has confirmed Battlefield 2042’s Season 6.
EA DICE’s community manager Kevin Johnson tweeted this out:
“We’re not done yet.
#Battlefield 2042 Season 6 is underway with more details at a later time.
Right now, the focus is on delivering another solid season with Season 5: New Dawn.
In case you missed it, S5 launches this Wednesday – June 7th!”
So to be clear, we are reporting this a day late, and Season 5 has already gone live. As reported by PSU, Season 5 came with a new map set in an industrial facility, alongside new weapons and gadgets. There are also a lot of quality of life improvements.
On the official Battlefield 2042 website, they explain that the new map is set in Czechia, with the industrial facility presumably being either an abandoned Soviet Union era or 90s post-Soviet construction. There is a hazardous area with a still heating turbine, a crash site of a derailed train, and a hidden bunker.
New weapons include a XCE Bar bolt-action rifle, the GEW-46 assault rifle, and the BFP.50 hand cannon.
This is not meant to disparage EA DICE’s efforts, but given that it took quite a few months before Battlefield 2042 reached the state it should have been in at launch, the studio may simply be catching up for lost time with this season.
In fact, it’s likely that there are already plans in place for more seasons to go through this year and the next, and even work that’s already put in for those upcoming seasons.
EA DICE will likely just keep working on Battlefield 2042 however long it takes to keep those loyal Battlefield fans happy until EA is ready to unveil the next new game in the Battlefield series.
This is unavoidable speculation, but the announcement of this season also has to be considered with the state of Battlefield’s main competition, Call of Duty, into account.
As Microsoft and Activision are still working on finalizing their acquisition deal, Call of Duty’s contract on PlayStation is ending soon.
Microsoft is unlikely to pull Call of Duty from PlayStation, as they themselves have explained many times to regulators. But, there’s still a lot of uncertainty on the future of the franchise.
There could be an opportunity for Battlefield from this situation in the future, but that would depend just as much if Battlefield can step up to Call of Duty. EA DICE isn’t quite ready to show their cards yet.
