Zach Snyder has revealed in a new interview that he is working on an RPG video game for upcoming Netflix project Rebel Moon.
Rebel Moon is a science fiction space opera film, with an ensemble cast boasting the likes of Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cleopatra Coleman, Fra Fee, Cary Elwes, and Sir Anthony Hopkins.
Sofia plays the movie’s lead, Kora, while Ed Skrein plays the antagonist Balisarius. Netflix has the confidence in this project that they are also filmed Rebel Moon Part 2 back-to-back.
The producers have shared this description of the film’s premise:
“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman who has a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.”
Apparently, Snyder had originally pitched Rebel Moon to Lucasfilm as a Star Wars film, sometime before they were sold to Disney. That means this project probably existed years before Snyder was tapped to helm the DC Extended Universe movies.
Let’s parse through what Zach Snyder said, but if you’d like to hear it from the man himself, you can watch the full interview here.
Here is where Zach teases the RPG, which he says he isn’t supposed to talk about.
“I mean, the one thing that I’m having a good time with – and I don’t know if I’m even supposed to talk about it – is this RPG that I’ve been doing, that is just literally insane. So immersive and so intense, and so huge.
And like, we talked about how we would do the game and, like, we just said, let’s go.”
And then, Zach elaborated on how he made the decision to make this a huge RPG.
“…I always wanted to do an RPG, but like, we could do it at this scale, or we could do it at a ridiculous scale. I was like, ridiculous scale, that’s the way to do it.
And they were like, well it’s going to take so much time – we’re going to do all this brain dumps. You’re going to have to tell us everything in the universe, what’s happening – and I was like, fine. We’re probably going to do it. Let’s scale all the way.”
Finally, he just confirms that it is a Rebel Moon game.
“It’s Rebel Moon, in a completely realized universe. You know, and it’s really going to be fun.”
This is all we have for now, but for gamers who have been looking for a new Mass Effect style game, that isn’t Mass Effect Andromeda, of course, or an alternative to the Star Wars games that we are getting now, that is a lot to pin your hopes on.
