A new rumor has come to light that the GTA Trilogy is soon coming to Epic Games Store.
Going by the full name Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, this is a compilation of three key formative Grand Theft Auto games released in 2021. Said games were Grand Theft Auto III (2001), Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002), and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (2004), but rather than handle the porting work themselves, Rockstar outsourced it to Grove Street Games.
Even Rockstar’s most fervent fans don’t take about GTA Trilogy anymore, because of the many bugs and issues the compilation faced upon launch. This occurred on pretty much all the platforms it was released on, namely, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
The compilation also received a port to Android and iOS, but as some have speculated, this compilation is likely based on assets from the older generation of mobile ports. While Rockstar has been reticent in sharing entirely what happened in the production of this compilation, it’s not a fondly remembered release.
So it may be strange for fans to learn that, in fact, GTA Trilogy was a sales success. In fact, it had exceeded Rockstar’s own expectations, though it’s likely they were not able to extend those sales for the next few months as more people learned about the issues with the compilation.
So it seems Rockstar Games and possibly Grove Street Games have spent over a year to work on this possible PC port. Our source claims the Epic Games Store listing will go live on January 19, 2023, at 4PM UTC.
While it may seem that it would be ideal to bring this game out as Epic’s free game for that week, or even for just a few hours, that will not be the case. Instead, our source states that the game will be going for half its price in the first week.
Unfortunately, this port is also coming while the bugs and issues on the earlier release have not yet been fully addressed, indicating that Rockstar Games have decided to just push through with the release regardless of the hit to their reputation, just to get as much sales as they can on the compilation in its current state.
Beyond the scope of our source, there is no word if GTA Trilogy will also be coming to Steam. If it isn’t to be released on the same day, Rockstar may eventually bring the game over to the platform as well.
Hopefully, Rockstar has a pleasant surprise in store for us by giving us a better version of this game than we expect.
