When id Software and Bethesda first revealed the cover art for the upcoming Doom, fans were less than enthused. In fact, the cover art was so plain and unattractive that it turned into a meme on reddit, NeoGAF, and elsewhere on the internet.
The space marine standing on a plain background with the Doom logo embossed in front of him did little to inspire awe or any of the feelings gamers felt when they first set their sights on the original Doom box art over two decades ago.
Last week, id Software and Bethesda launched a poll on Twitter asking fans of the series to pick a replacement piece of art, offering two choices.
The winner has since been revealed–it’s the kickass one in red that shows the space marine taking on hordes upon hordes of hellish demons in an infernal environment. The chosen cover evokes the same look and feel of the original Doom box art.
Fans of Doom liked it so much that the cover art won by a margin of 68 to 32 percent with over 62,000 votes.

The upcoming Doom is set to launch across the PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 13. id Software will be holding a multiplayer beta at some point before the game’s launch, although details for that have yet to be revealed.
