Some would consider 2011 to be the year of hacking scandals, with Steam, Square Enix, BioWare and (most infamously) the PSN all being hit. Well, it looks like MMO Rift has been hacked, just in time to make this year’s list.
According to Rift developer Trion Worlds, some accounts have been compromised by ‘unauthorized intruders.’ The developers sent out emails to subscribers informing them of the security breach.
“The database in question contained information including user names, encrypted passwords, dates of birth, email addresses, billing addresses, and the first and last four digits and expiration dates of customer credit cards.” Trion said in a statement. “There is no evidence, and we have no reason to believe, that full credit card information was accessed or compromised in any way. We have already taken further action to strengthen our systems, even as we, with external security experts, continue to research the extent of the unauthorized access.”
Despite Trion’s confidence that nothing’s been stolen, they’ve reset all passwords just to stick on the safe side, which is something you probably should be doing anyway.
While Trion expects service to run as usual, just in case there’s any downtime they’ve given everyone a ‘Moneybags Purse’ which increases your looted coin by 10%.
