Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem Is An Action RPG To Look Out For

March 2, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Action RPG fans should keep a close eye on Wolcen.

The action RPG formerly known as Umbra is changing its name to Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem. Developed by the France-based Wolcen Studios, formerly known as Solarfall Games, the new title is described as an open world action RPG. The developers didn’t say it, but that sounds pretty similar to the first two Sacred games.

The game was originally crowdfunded by 11,000 backers as Umbra, then later renamed. Wolcen is the first title being developed by the studio and is powered by CryEngine.

Wolcen is expected to release on Steam through its Early Access program on March 24, containing core features that will be built upon with new mechanics. The game will debut with hack-and-slash gameplay, progression systems and a story, and players will be able to explore large segments of its expansive open world. The game’s environments will contain some element of destructibility, and specific parts of the environment can be affected by elemental abilities and magic–water can conduct electricity, fire can be doused by water or ice, and so on.

According to its developers, players will first be able to use one of the game’s core combat features, Apocalyptic Form, which lets players evolve their special abilities and appearance based on their play style. Planned content includes a fully fleshed out co-op mode, weapon and armor crafting, player housing, and the ability to transform player houses into dungeons for the community to explore.

Unlike other action RPGs, the game doesn’t have a class limitation, so players can make characters by choosing the skills they like.

Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem will have an initial PC release and eventually come to consoles.
