The Game Awards is only about eight hours away from launch, so people are making their final predictions as to what will be shown tonight. Host Geoff Keighley has repeatedly said that the show will have plenty of announcements and will be a “big event” for gamers. Then again, he says that basically every year, no matter what. But to be fair, The Game Awards often has many big announcements that help set the tone for the next gaming year. The question is, will key titles be there? The one that many are asking for is Legend Of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.
The title got its official announcement at the Nintendo Direct back in September, and fans were relieved to learn of its May release date. However, since that reveal trailer, we’ve gotten nothing. We know the game will be at The Game Awards in at least some fashion because it’s up for the “Most Anticipated Game” award. One that it might win depending on how the votes go. But in terms of a trailer, can we expect that from Nintendo?
It’s 50-50 at best. While Nintendo has been a part of The Game Awards since its inception, it’s not always been as involved as Microsoft and Sony. Arguably the biggest impact that Nintendo has had on the show over the years was when Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released the night of the show, and they unveiled the DLC packs with Joker being the first character inclusion. There was also the infamous 2017 incident where Reggie Fils-Aime helped reveal Bayonetta 3, and then we didn’t hear about it again for years.
In more recent Game Awards shows, Nintendo has been rather silent with major announcements. That’s not to say that one couldn’t happen here, but it’s far from a guarantee.
So if Legend Of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom won’t get a “big debut” at the show, when could we expect one? Many fans think that Nintendo will be “selfish” and let the next announcement come during their next Nintendo Direct. The logic behind this is the game doesn’t come out until next May, and thus they can focus longer on the title to give more details instead of having a short trailer that may not reveal too much.
The Game Awards are tonight, starting at 730 EST, so if the game is there or not, we’ll find out soon enough.
