Recent changes to the Battlefield 2042 overview page appear to suggest that future seasons for the title will only include one new multiplayer map per season. The blog outlines that Battlefield 2042’s maps offer players “unprecedented scale and choices in gameplay.” It continues “each Season introduces a map with new experiences to challenge you and push gameplay even farther.” Seeming to put more emphasis on Battlefield Portal the segment asserts “you can rediscover the classics maps of Battlefield 1942, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3 – or change the rules of war by adding a modern twist using content from Battlefield 2042.”
The update has already received negative reactions online with players pointing to a previous post from the Battlefield developers stating “In our first year of live service, we will deliver four Seasons, with four Battle Passes, four new Specialists, and new locations along with fresh new content.” Alongside this, Insider Gaming reported that internal documents and images they had received about Battlefield 2042 aimed to consistently launch “multiple maps per month, including huge support for Battlefield PORTAL.”
Despite Battlefield 2042’s rocky launch, EA reaffirmed in a February earnings call its “commitment” to providing major updates to players in future seasons. Battlefield 2042’s Season 3 is set to launch on November 22nd, 2022, which is set to include “a massive overhaul on the way that you’ll play with Specialists.” This change to the Specialists has been a consistent topic of discussion and debate amongst the game’s player base since Battlefield 2042’s Technical Playtest in the summer of 2021. Alongside the announcement earlier this year that DICE would be halting support on the game’s Hazard Zone mode players can expect the following from the game’s upcoming Season 3:
- 1 new map
- 1 new specialist
- 1 new Battle Pass
- New weapons
- New vehicles
