Vita Won’t Play PS1 Games at Launch

November 28, 2011 by Mat Growcott

It has been confirmed that the Vita will definitely not support PS1 games at launch

It's been debated for several weeks now on whether or not the Vita would support "Game Archive" games at launch, with Sony both confirming and denying that PS1 support will be present in the handheld at launch. Now Andriasang have spotted an official response on the Japanese website that confirms the feature won't be available to early buyers, although there seems to be plans to add it in after launch via firmware update.

Taking the form of a question and answer, the question asks whether the Vita supports Game Archive titles. The answer reads "At the time of release PS Vita (will not support Game Archives). Plans for future measures will be announced shortly."

Hopefully this will be added fairly quickly, detractors will have a field day.
