The Mortal Kombat franchise is one that had lasted 30 years in the gaming industry. But, of course, that’s not something every series can do. Some might have been born 30+ years ago, but that doesn’t mean their legacy is more than a title or two. The bloody fighting game franchise, however, has grown over the years. You could even fairly say that the titles are more popular now than ever because of modern technologies and certain reinventions. That is proven by their last mainline title, which sold more than any other title in the series before it. Now, just after their 30th anniversary, a new title has been revealed: Mortal Kombat Onslaught.
However, it needs to be stated immediately that this isn’t a console/PC title. Instead, it’s a mobile game and quite a different one. In Mortal Kombat Onslaught, you’ll collect characters from Mortal Kombat history and bring them together to fight off enemies in group battles, battles that take place in real-time and with RPG elements. As we said, this isn’t the game you were expecting.
But wait, there’s more. The game will have a “cinematic story” exclusive to the mobile title. In it, a dark force is trying to create havoc across the realms, and you must raise a party to stop it. So if nothing else, you might want to play the game to see how unique the story is or isn’t.
Either way, the team behind the game is very excited about their mobile title:
“We are pushing the boundaries of Mortal Kombat to allow players to experience the franchise in new ways, while still staying true to its core visceral nature,” said Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer, NetherRealm Studios. “With Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, we reimagined Mortal Kombat into a strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced, group melee combat that both new and existing fans can enjoy.”
Whether that’s true or not will have to be determined later on. However, NetherRealm Studios has surprised players in the past by doing things that no one expected, yet millions enjoyed. That includes doing the Injustice franchise, which became quite successful, and many are expecting a third title in that line soon enough.
Speaking solely from the “collection” standpoint, there is a lot of potential in bringing all sorts of characters from the series’ past together to make unique squads. For example, imagine having a team with Liu Kang, Goro, Scorpion, and Raiden at your beck and call. Or, you could have the “sisters” squad of Kitana, Mileena, Jade, and Skarlet! The potential is there, and because it’s a mobile game, more characters can be added over time to flesh out the roster more.
