Modern Warfare 3 may have to sell a few more million copies to become the bestselling game of all time, but it’s almost certainly the most preordered game in history.
According to Amazon.com, Game, GameStation, GameStop, and a number of other retailers worldwide, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the most preordered title of all time with over an estimated 9 million units booked prior to the game’s release today.
The sales figures broke records previously set by Call of Duty: Black Ops.
Despite seeing stiff competition from EA’s military shooter Battlefield 3, the Call of Duty franchise appears to have prevailed due to its continued popularity on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles.
Activision has yet to reveal official sales figures, but we don’t think they’ll be too far off the estimated mark given the success of the launch, which is expected to continue unabated well into the holiday season. Modern Warfare 3 could not have been released at a better time.
