During Gamescom Opening Night Live, Level Infinite revealed a brand new open-world survival MMO set in the Dune universe. Dune Awakening is a new IP from this studio, but doesn’t have a gameplay trailer or release date yet.
The first trailer of Dune Awakening brings us to Arrakis, the sandy planet of Dune. This planet holds a precious resource: the spice, a drug crucial for space travel. Spice mining operations gather this valuable resource across all of Arrakis. But this planet isn’t just a sandy place filled with spice–it is also the home of one of the most popular monsters in pop culture, the gigantic sandworms.
This first trailer for Dune Awakening doesn’t reveal much about what players will actually have to do in this game. We only see Arrakis, a sandworm, and someone brave enough to jump right into that giant hole filled with teeth. We can assume this hero might be a version of Paul Atreides, but this is only speculation at this time.
According to Dune Awakening‘s developer Funcom, this open-world survival MMO will place thousands of players in the same version of Arrakis. Players will have to build their own shelters to protect themselves from sandstorms and make sure their stillsuits are intact to survive in the desert.
To explore Arrakis, players can set out in various vehicles inspired by Dune‘s universe. There are various landmarks to discover, from abandoned biological testing stations to the wreckage of fallen spaceships.
The spice is at the core of the game, and players need to harvest this resource while avoiding ending up as a sandworm’s snack. Sandworms are not the only threat, as other players may also want to attack your harvester and steal your precious spice.
Dune Awakening will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows. There is no official release date for the game yet, but you can already add it to your wishlist.
