James Gunn Reveals Interesting Tidbit About Understanding Groot

It is always fascinating to see how something can change dramatically based on the simple concept of making something that people resonate with in a big way. From the moment that Guardians of the Galaxy was approved for the MCU, director/writer James Gunn had a big challenge on his hands. Mainly in that he had to find a way to make some VERY niche characters come to life in a way that people would enjoy. One of the biggest challenges by far was that of the sentient alien tree known as Groot.

Sure enough, he not only did that (and even got Vin Diesel to be his voice hilariously enough), he made “Multiple Versions” of Groot that people fell in love with over time. Not just the original Groot, but baby Groot, kid Groot, and Teen Groot. But lovely visuals aside, the one thing that people still love hearing is “I Am Groot”, but that’s where James Gunn revealed a very fun thing on Twitter. As you can see above, he was asked about “translating” Groot and whether people see that stuff.

Apparently, if you are someone who doesn’t know Groot or hasn’t bonded with him, you won’t see anything but “I Am Groot”, but if you’re a member of the GOTG or someone like Thor, you’ll apparently get a translation that reveals what he’s really saying. The trick apparently is that you need to have “bonded” with Groot and thus get the feel for what he is saying when he says those words. Which we actually saw in the first movie when Quill didn’t get why Groot was saying the three words over and over again.

It honestly shows just how connected Gunn is with these characters, and thus makes it sad that soon his time with them will be done.
