Paradox Interactive and Obsidian Entertainment, the makers of Pillars of Eternity, announced today that "The Road to Eternity," the behind-the-scenes documentary following the crowdfunded RPG, has been released.
The documentary was developed as a part of the successful Kickstarter campaign, which took place in late 2012 and saw the release of Pillars of Eternity in early 2015. The documentary provides a rare and unfiltered look at how crowdfunding managed to save the studio during one of its "darkest times," but also lead to the creation of one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs of all time. I personally wrote about how Pillars of Eternity made me rediscover my love for video games.
The game far exceeded the expectations of its backers and Obsidian delivered an RPG worthy of standing with the classics like Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate and Fallout.
In "The Road to Eternity," Obsidian's team of developers including Josh Sawyer, Adam Brennecke, and Feargus Urquhart speak candidly about the game's development, how its story came together, and how bad things really got for the studio before crowdfunding literally managed to save the company, and how much better things became thanks to fan support. The documentary offers a rare look at what it's like for an independent studio to develop a game.
You can watch it at Vimeo for $0.99.
