There's a serious bug in AMD's newly released Crimson driver suite that can damage certain GPUs, causing them to fail. The bug is serious enough that it was reported by a number of users on Reddit's r/pcmasterrace and the AMD subreddit.
The bug appears to lock GPU fan speed at a low setting and potentially damage graphics cards for gamers who are playing games for extended periods of time. While most affected users have reported crashes, some state that their cards overheated and damaged other parts of their computer.
AMD has reached out to us to say that they are well aware of the issue and are working to issue a hotfix for the drivers today, that owners will be able to download from their official website.
I wanted to let you know that AMD is aware of isolated reports of low fan states following the installation of Radeon Software ‘Crimson Edition’ on select Radeon GPUs. Its engineering teams have identified and addressed this issue, and AMD intends to release a hotfix on amd.com this coming Monday, November 30th.
